Molecular weight

From Encyclopædia

molecular weight
molecular weight
The molecular weight of a substance is the weight of one molecule of the substance relative to the weight of an atom of the most abundant isotope of carbon, which is taken as exactly 12. Thus, a substance whose molecular weight is 144 has molecules exactly 12 times heavier than a carbon-12 atom. In practice, the molecular weight is found by taking the sum of the atomic weights (see ATOMIC WEIGHT) of all the atoms in the molecule.
