Luster is the appearance of a mineral's surface in reflected light. Minerals such as pyrite and galena have a metallic luster; such minerals are frequently dark and opaque, even on thin edges. light-colored minerals have various nonmetallic lusters: adamantine or brilliant (diamond), greasy (nepheline), resinous (sphalerite), silky (asbestos minerals), pearly (the micas), and vitreous, or glassy (quartz).
