Jet

From Encyclopædia

Jet, a black gemstone formed by the submersion of driftwood in seafloor mud, is a dense variety of lignite coal. Used since ancient times to make carved talismans, it has also been used as gems for mourning and for religious ceremonies, but has been replaced by the harder black tourmaline and black onyx.
