Intervention
From Encyclopædia
Intervention, in INTERNATIONAL LAW, is diplomatic or military interference by one
nation in the affairs of another without that
nation's consent. It is considered illegal under customary international law, as well as in many treaties. Intervening countries usually state that they are intervening to protect their own nationals or to defend themselves against
aggression by the other country. Intervention is legal only when done for humanitarian reasons (prevention of genocide) or under the "collective intervention" terms of the United
nations charter to preserve international peace and security. In
civil law, intervention is a procedure through which a person whose rights are affected by a lawsuit may become a party to that lawsuit. Such a person can join with the plaintiff or with the defendant or can intervene with a claim adverse to both parties.
