Highland

Highland, an administrative region in northern
Scotland, is bounded by the
Atlantic Ocean on the west and north and the North Sea on the east. It covers 26,136 km (10,091 sq mi), and the population is 198,617 (1985 est.). Highland is mostly mountainous except at the northeastern tip. INVERNESS is the principal town. Highland, an important tourist area, was created in 1975, when the local government of
Scotland was reorganized, from the former counties of CAITHNESS,
Nairn,
Sutherland, and parts of
Argyll, INVERNESS,
Moray, and
Ross and Cromarty.
