Ghats
From Encyclopædia
{gahts} The Ghats (Hindi, "steps") are two mountain ranges bordering the
Deccan Plateau in southern India. The Western Ghats, with an
average height of 915 to 1,525 m (3,000 to 5,000 ft), extend about 1,600 km (1,000 mi) along the coast of the
Arabian Sea. They are the watershed for the Godavari, Kistna, and Cauvery rivers; the Palghat Gap is their only break. The Eastern Ghats, a discontinuous series of hills,
average height 610 m (2,000 ft), extend about 1,450 m (900 mi) from the Mahanadi Valley to the Nilgiri Hills along the Bay of Bengal.
