Gethsemane

From Encyclopædia

Gethsemane
Gethsemane
{geth-sem'-uh-nee} Gethsemane is the place on the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem where Jesus Christ was betrayed by Judas Iscariot and arrested while praying with his disciples after the Last Supper. The name (Matt. 26:36; Mark 14:32) may have meant "oil vat," suggesting a stand of olive trees. John's Gospel (18:1) refers to the site as a garden; hence, the composite designation, the Garden of Gethsemane. Despite several conjectures, the site is not precisely identifiable today.
