Fine
From Encyclopædia
A fine is a sum of
money that must be paid to a government as
punishment for violating a law. For major offenses the penalty may be either a fine or a jail sentence, or both. Most traffic violations and other
misdemeanors, such as the violation of
city ordinances, carry only fines. Fines were also used to settle land disputes under old
common law.The imposition of fixed fines is often criticized as discriminating against the poor, and in some countries fines are set in terms of days, the amount paid depending on the offender's daily income. Another trend is to fine twice the amount of the criminal's gain.
