Emery

From Encyclopædia

emery
emery
Emery is a mineral assemblage, an intimate mixture of 60%-75% CORUNDUM and 10%-35% magnetite that since ancient times has been used as an ABRASIVE because of its hardness (7-9). Sometimes including hematite and spinel, emery is a black, fine-grained mineral deposit that resembles--and was long considered to be--an iron ore. It occurs in limestones or in aluminum-rich shales that have been altered by intrusion of igneous rocks.
