From Encyclopædia

bishop
bishop
A bishop (from the Greek word meaning "overseer" or "superintendent") is a member of the highest ranking order of the Christian ministry (see MINISTRY, CHRISTIAN). The word was first applied to the elders, or presbyters, of local churches in the New Testament. By the 2d century the office of bishop had become distinct from and superior to the office of elder.
