Barents Sea
From Encyclopædia
The Barents Sea (formerly called the Murmean Sea) is an extension of the Arctic Ocean lying north of
Norway and
Russia. It was named in 1853 for Willem BARENTS, a 16th-century Dutch
Explorer who sought a
Northeast Passage to the Orient. It has an area of about 1,400,000 sq km (540,000 sq mi). In northern sections of the sea, the
average winter air temperature is -25 deg C (-13 deg F), but the Russian port of
Murmansk remains ice-free in winter, partly because of the
North Cape Current.
