America
The name America applies to either continent of the Western Hemisphere (North America or South America) or to all the land masses in that hemisphere, covering a total area of approximately 42,961,000 sq km (16,586,000 sq mi). America is also used as an abbreviated form of the United States of America. It is named for the Italian navigator Amerigo VESPUCCI and was first used on a map in 1507 by Martin Waldseemuller.
