{ak'-chuh-wair-ee} An actuary estimates risks and determines premiums for insurance companies. For example, an actuary may calculate the likelihood of fires causing losses for a particular group of property owners, basing the projection on their rate of fires in the past. The profession requires intensive training in mathematics, statistics, accounting, and insurance probabilities.
