From Encyclopædia

Actors' Equity Association
Actors' Equity Association
Actors' Equity Association, founded in 1913, is the union encompassing all professional performers who work in the legitimate theater in the United States. It affiliated with the American Federation of Labor in 1919 and is now part of the AFL-CIO. The union determines the minimum pay scales for Broadway and Off Broadway performers, provides for arbitration arising out of members' contracts, and regulates the importation of foreign actors and the use of nonunion performers. Any actor who has worked within Equity's jurisdiction or who has a bona fide offer from an Equity producer is qualified to join.
