Sir John Abbott, b. Mar. 12, 1821, d. Oct. 30, 1893, was
prime minister of Canada from 1891 to 1892. A lawyer, he was elected to the Legislative
assembly as a Conservative in 1857. He served there, and later in the Canadian House of Commons, until 1874. Abbott sat in the House again from 1880 to 1887, when he was appointed to the Canadian Senate. He was chosen
prime minister on Sir John Macdonald's death in 1891, but poor health forced his resignation after 18 months.
